01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Located in Kawashima Awatacho, Nishikyo Ward, Kyoto, the Japanese confectionery shop Kagetsu primarily supplies custom creations to tea ceremony instructors. Rather than welcoming walk-in browsing of pre-stocked display cases, the shop operates on an advance reservation and hold basis. Among the confections tailored for tea gatherings is kuzumochi-kan; one customer noted that when picking up a reserved order in the evening, the staff had thoughtfully packaged the sweets with dry ice.
Their fuyaki sweet, Kagetsu, is made from crisp wheat-gluten wafers with a crumbly, tender melt-in-the-mouth texture that makes it approachable for all ages. Inside the shop, visitors can view artistic sweet creations reminiscent of paintings alongside an array of traditional tools historically used in confection making.
Kagetsu is open Tuesday through Saturday from 9:30 to 17:30, and on Sundays until 17:00, with Mondays closed. Wheelchair-accessible parking is not available, and the entrance is not wheelchair-accessible, so prospective visitors should keep these facility details in mind before making the trip.
